‘THE MATCH’
by pauly
What a day I had on Saturday
When I went to see ‘The City’
They were playing against United and this fixtures never pretty
It started off quite even…
you know, one end to the other
and as the strikers made their moves
defenders rushed to cover.
Thumping headers won and lost,
bone-crunching tackles followed,
The players worked their socks off
as the crowd all yelled and hollered!
The usual suspects sang their songs
and all the crowd joined in…..
from our supporters, not from theirs..
we raised up quite a din.
And as I glanced around the ground,
the head-count I would bet…
must be almost twenty-thousand…..
as the ball screamed in the net!.
‘They’ve scored’ somebody grunted….
with a voice as dark as coal
I’d been so involved with looking around
I’d missed the ruddy goal!
‘Damn and blast’ I muttered
as we kicked off once again
and just to make things even worse
it hammered down with rain….
I only had my ‘home’ shirt on,
if only I’d been wiser…..
as I looked down at my soaked shirt
In went the equaliser!
‘I don’t bloody believe it!’
I shouted with dismay
‘The ball keeps going in the net
every time I look away!’
At least we Reds were happy
to be back on level terms
Half time came, discussions followed,
On how much our strikers earn.
‘Last season Jones got twenty goals
and earned two million quid!’
Now other Clubs are after him
And putting in their bids….
‘We could get twenty-million,
if we sell him pretty soon’
‘I heard a rumour we might buy
that lad from Cameroon’.
Two years ago he’d tended goats
No shoes, no hopes, no shirt
He’d thought his life was all mapped out
as he kicked a ball in dirt
By chance though he was scouted
By a coach on his vacation, and…
Within six months he’d turned full-pro
and represents his nation.
If only that lad had been me…..
I dreamt and in my head
Saw me line up with all the team
In our strip of ‘scarlet red’
Stepping up to lift the Cup
And hearing the crowd roar…..
I dreamt and dreamt and then awoke
when I’d heard myself snore!
All around were standing…
as I sat there in my seat
‘Three-all! … great match!’… they all clapped
as the game was now complete.
I’d fell asleep so soundly, that
I’d missed the second half
And knowing I’d missed four more goals
made everybody laugh
We made our way down to the pub
I felt a complete ‘nelly’
My mates called me a few choice names!
Then later on the telly…..
Around half ten the match was shown
and I saw every goal...
And confirmed I love my football club
with all my heart and soul
And re-affirmed my loyalties.
One final vow I make……
Next week away to Rovers
I will try to stay awake!
‘Come on you Reds!’
