Snooze
By Bruce Denton
So it's hello to the goodbye of my life,
Blowing out the candles of light.
A company of shadows flicker here and there,
They want to come, they want to go,
They are nowhere.
Sitting in the darkness of the shortest day,
Staring at all four walls.
But there is no change, there is no break.
There is just a time delay.
Once an active man with a good profession,
Now an inactive man absorbed by depression.
Builder of the past, soldier of the war,
Head of the family,
Barely crawling across the floor.
What he would give for an instant cure,
Or to recall the long forgotten days once more.
Let me sleep in darkness,
As the light it quickly fades.
Casting shadows on my memories,
And time, it slips away.
Be there, you're always here,
On the dry lips of a dying man.
There will never be a goodbye.
There are no questions why.
