John McEnroe

By Terry Killeavy

This man was born to work his passion
To give the world a sporting fashion
To be the best, whilst still a lad
With love and guidence from his dad
Serve and volley was his trade, and those huge servers he outplayed.
He didn't care for worthless honours
Cared even less for Jimmy Connors
Reputations yes, have come and gone, Now McEnroe was number one.
In singles he won 77, on his way to Tennis heaven.
And to those crowds he was so wild, but to himself was still a child.
But as a child became a dad, and first it was a little lad
Followed by another one, then a third came along
Now McEnroe new that score, as he walked through the legends door.
Now with Patty and two more tots, don't forget Ruby - now that makes lots.
This man has made the world much better, by doing things not by the letter.
A family man, who played the crowd - For that he should be very proud..
And to this day he still is John, and to his friends - still number one.
