As a Small Child

By Nadeem

As a small child, sadness pierced through me,
It is that same sadness, which channels from that past time to now,
Reminding me of what I came from,
Curing my invincibility.

Though much changes, sadness tastes the same.
I do feel sad and I do feel hopeless.
I have everything going for me, I have everything going at me.
We all have to hide, to protect our invincibility.

I am a ‘people person’ they say, but I don’t like people,
From my roots the heart is worn as a brooch.
I can see the desire to be warm but my spirit shivers.
The fears you hide are so much more alluring.

Come daylight everything seems so much clearer,
Does the darkness exaggerate or the charm of the sun blind me?
I feel like I could vomit a blanket of emotion.
I am my mother’s son.
